Photographs of people can have meaning that transcends beyond the identity if the individual portrayed.  This class will explore ideas and concepts artists can use to make statements through their photography using the portrait as the base genre.  Through a series of classroom sessions and homework assignments, you will practice making conceptual portraits, and we will finish by looking at your work and engaging in a critique on the last day of class.

Session One: Learn about portrait photography, view demonstration of Ray’s techniques for conceptual portraits, work with Ray to make portraits with a professional model.

Session Two: Work with Ray to make portraits with two professional models.

Session Three: Ray will lead a review of student work.

Optional Homework: Students can make portraits on their own during the week and bring them to class for review.

Topics for the day will include:

  • pose and gesture

  • mood

  • concept and ideas

  • lighting

  • working with models, amateur and professional

  • finding models to work with and space to rent for projects

A critique session will be scheduled in the weeks following the session for anyone who would like feedback on the work they have made.
