Join fine artists Susan de Witt (website) and Ray Bidegain for a rigorous 3-day workshop in polymer plate photogravure. During this 3-day weekend workshop you will learn how to take your original photographs or drawings and print them using Charbonnel inks and an etching press. All materials will be supplied, lunch will be provided each day, and students will leave the session with many one of a kind prints. Hours each day will be 9 - 5.
Topics to be covered:
Digital positives - We will spend the first day learning how to make our own enlarged digital positives for polymer plate gravure. We will discuss and learn how to create an adjustment curve that is appropriate for the process. Calibration of your your exposure and development of the polymer plates is next followed by press settings and adjustments.
Both basic and advanced Chine Collé methods (permanently affixing delicate papers to your matrix for added depth and color). Here you can use Japanese papers, which are both strong and delicate at the same time.
- Simple registration technique for perfect alignment of more than one plate.
- A technique called a la poupée - whereby you can ‘color’ your prints with multiple colors. This method allows you add different shades to one plate, rather than using multiple plates to achieve a similar outcome.
- How to make diptychs and triptychs.
- printing on alternative paper stocks
- Class limited to 3 students
