Ray Bidegain and Patrick Kolb will be teaming up with workshop veteran Jeanette Altman July 10-13 for a four-day platinum/palladium workshop. This is an expansion of the popular three-day workshop series by Ray and Patrick. Additions to the agenda will be the study of tailoring a film negative to the platinum/palladium process, crafting a film negative for scanning, the scanning of the negative for platinum/palladium, and tailoring a digital negative to platinum/palladium printing. Their workshop will encompass all of this, as well as spending two days demystifying the platinum/palladium process. This very hands-on workshop will again be on the Washington State University campus in Vancouver, WA.

Topics to be covered:

  1. The chemistry of the process
  2. Techniques for hand coating the paper
  3. Paper stocks suitable for platinum/palladium prints.
  4. Contrast control
  5. Suppliers
  6. Print finishing and presentation
  7. UV light sources
  8. The making of in camera negatives for platinum printing
  9. Production of enlarged negatives for platinum printing.
  10. Questions and topics from the students

The Plan:

We will be working with medium format or larger negatives (4x5 is the best size to learn with and are recommended). Any negative that prints well on number 2 or 3 grade of silver paper will work for platinum printing we will provide appropriate negatives to print with if you don't have your own.

The workshop will begin by looking at our platinum prints as well as examples of each participant's work. Please bring prints to share with the students. The next few hours will be spent explaining and demonstrating the process. After this discussion the class will spend the majority of the rest of the workshop printing. We will continue the instruction as We supervise and assist you with you work. By the end of the workshop you will have have a nice stack of platinum prints, and a good understanding of the process.

The workshop is limited to 10 students and you may apply online here.  After you apply we will contact you with information on how you can pay your tuition deposit
